Forestry Field Day – Augusta, MI

The Michigan Chapter Walnut Council is hosting a Forestry Field Day on Saturday, April 8, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for Tree Farm, Michigan Forest Association and Walnut Council members.

8:45-9:45 am  Registration  Coffee, refreshments and opening discussions

9:45-11:45 am  Walking tour of three one-acre test plots.  Discussions by Pete Klink and Lisa Parker on timber stand improvements (TSI), wildlife habitat, management goals, vines, and ongoing questions and discussions on invasive species…and much more!

12:00-12:30 pm Lunch will be provided

12:30-1:00 pm Guest speaker (MSU) Topic: Perennial Target Canker

1:00-3:00 pm Sawmill Demonstrations Alaska Sawmill Demonstration  Open discussion on issues.  3:00 pm Individual tours of walnut plantations (recent and mature stands)

3:00 – 3:30 pm  Walnut Council Board of Directors meeting (public welcome)

3:30 pm Private discussions if applicable

Chainsaw Safety System Training!

Wednesday, March 22, 2017   at the Saginaw Field and Stream Club,  Saginaw MI  9 am – 4 pm.

This course is put on by the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration, under the General Industry Safety Standards, Part 53, Tree Trimming and Removal and paid for through the Consultation, Education, and Training Grant. The grant is administered by Bay College in Escanaba, Michigan and taugh by instructor Chuck Oslund, retired surveyor and firefighter for the USDA Forest Service.

The training will consist of five hours of classroom presentation running from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm followed by a 1-2 hour field demonstration.  If you currently operate a chainsaw, or plan to purchase a saw in the future, you need to be aware of these concepts to help you use it safely.

Items required for you to bring to this training:

  • Safety Glasses
  • Hard Hat (Can be without Face shield)
